According to TPO, following the success of Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien), Ho Chi Minh City is considering extending the line into Binh Chanh district while also pushing forward 11 additional metro lines with a combined length of over 600 km.
These lines will tightly weave through residential and new-town areas across the city, with sections extending all the way to outer districts such as Can Gio and Cu Chi.
The 2021–2030 Ho Chi Minh City planning (with vision to 2050) clearly sets out a strategy of shaping and expanding the urban area around a TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) model centered on metro lines. Key goals include strengthening connectivity with the Southeast region and building a modern urban-rail network that ties together mixed-use centers, satellite cities and industrial zones. At the same time, the plan also develops the railway-industry base — including manufacturing and components — that supports urban-rail operations.

Specifically, Ho Chi Minh City plans to add seven metro lines crossing the urban core, two ring-belt metro lines, one riverside LRT/tramway, and one MRT/LRT line connecting to the Can Gio coastal reclamation tourism city.
